What actually belongs on a small business website

Most sites have the wrong things on them, and are missing the two or three that would make the difference.

Cut the welcome message

Nobody has ever chosen a supplier because of a paragraph beginning welcome to our website. It occupies the most valuable space you own and says nothing.

Replace it with what you do, where you do it, and the action you want.

Add the proof

Whatever your version of proof is, it should be structured and prominent. For a consignor that is a sales record. For a club it is competition results. For a builder it is completed jobs with photographs.

Most businesses have this material and keep it in a drawer, or worse, in a single paragraph on an about page.

Publish your prices, or a range

The most common objection we hear, and the change that most reliably increases enquiries. People assume the worst when you hide it, and the ones who ring anyway are usually the wrong ones.

A from figure is enough. It filters, it builds trust, and it shortens every conversation that follows.

Name the people

Small businesses win against chains on exactly one thing: a human answers. Then they build websites with a generic contact form and no names on it.

Put the people on the site. Photographs, names, direct numbers if you can bear it.
