What a bad website actually costs you

Not the build fee. The bookings, enquiries and quotes that never happened because somebody could not do the thing they came to do.

Nobody bills you for it

A poor website never sends an invoice. That is the whole problem. If your van cost you three hundred pounds a month in repairs you would have replaced it years ago, because the number arrives in the post and demands attention.

The website costs more than the van and sends nothing. The loss shows up as a quiet absence: the society that booked elsewhere, the mare that went to another stud, the table that went to the place with online reservations.

Do the arithmetic on one lost enquiry a week

Take a golf club. A visitor fourball at forty pounds a head is a hundred and sixty pounds. Lose one a week to a booking form that does not work and that is eight thousand three hundred pounds a year, before anybody buys a sandwich.

A society day is worth more again. Miss four a season because the enquiry went to a voicemail nobody checks and you have lost more than most clubs spend on marketing in a decade.

The competitor comparison is the real cost

Very few customers decide you are bad. They decide somebody else is easier. They had your page and another one open, one of them let them book at ten at night, and that was the whole contest.

You never find out it happened. There is no bounce, no complaint, no feedback. The revenue simply appears on somebody else's books.

What to do about it this week

Open your own site on your phone. Try to do the thing a customer would want to do: book, enquire, get a price, find your opening hours. Time yourself.

If it takes more than thirty seconds, or if it ends with ring us during office hours, you have found the leak.
