A site that looks good and generates nothing is decoration

Every page should have one action in mind. Most have none.

Pretty is not the same as effective

Plenty of small businesses have spent real money on a site that photographs well and converts nobody. The design was judged on whether the owner liked looking at it, which is the wrong test.

The right test is whether a stranger can complete the thing they came to do.

One page, one action

Before a page is designed, decide the single action it exists to produce. A booking. An enquiry. A phone call. A table reservation. A quote request.

Then remove anything that competes with it. Most pages fail because they offer six equally weighted things and the visitor picks none of them.

The form is where it all goes wrong

Long forms are abandoned. Ask for the minimum you need to have a useful conversation, and put the difficult questions after the easy ones.

Qualifying fields are worth their weight though. A budget range and a timescale mean you pick up the phone already knowing what the conversation is.

Make the phone number tappable

It sounds too small to matter. It is consistently one of the highest impact changes we make to an existing site, particularly for anything urgent.
